Hola! Tomorrow I'm heading to San Carlos, Costa Rica, for 3 weeks. I created this blog because so many of you were interested in my trip, so now you can follow me here!
I'm going on a "volunteer vacation," which is basically a trip in which you get to travel to a new country, experience a different culture, and give back. I'm going with a program called Cross Cultural Solutions. Last year, I traveled to Ayacucho, Peru, with CCS over my spring break. I was only there for a week, but I loved the experience so much that I knew I had to do it again. I also knew that I wanted to stay for awhile and not just visit a country, but feel like I'm living there. I was originally planning on going to Ghana this summer, but there's just too much turmoil in Northern Africa right now. I've heard wonderful things about Costa Rica, plus I love speaking Spanish, so it seemed like the next best choice.
So what exactly will I be doing? Well, CCS uses your skills and interests to figure out the best volunteer placement for you. And since I teach English on a daily basis, I will be teaching English in Costa Rica too.... but to kindergarteners. I'm really excited about this because I like a challenge, and little kids will be a fun change of pace.
Another thing everyone asks is, "So you won't know anyone on the trip???" No, I won't, and I think this is the least of my worries. There are about 20 other volunteers arriving the same day I am, and they're all around my age. We're all in the same boat with not knowing anyone, so you kinda have automatic friends.
I leave in less than 12 hours, and my only concerns right now are the short connection times between my flights! I'm missing Father's Day, my mom's birthday, the 4th of July, and my own birthday..... but I know this will be the experience of a lifetime. I'm going to experience a new world, broaden my horizons, break my heart open and let a little more light in, and put some good out in the world while I'm at it. Hasta luego!
